It was for a good cause! HBO’s Last Week Tonight host John Oliver confirmed the rumors that he purchased Russell Crowe’s groin protector from the filmCinderella Man for $7K.
While he was at it, he also snapped up some of his clothing from Robin Hood and Les Miserables and chairs from American Gangster. Crowe, of course, held “The Art of Divorce” auction with Sotheby’s in Australia recently, putting artwork, movie memorabilia, musical instruments and much more gathered during his nine-year marriage on the block.
- But Oliver isn’t going to keep the jockstrap for himself. Instead, he’s going to send it to Blockbuster in Anchorage, Alaska, in a whimsical bid to draw customers in with a display of pieces of Hollywood history.
- (As Oliver explained, there is only one Blockbuster left in all of Anchorage. Apparently streaming services are tough to get that far up North).
- But in order to nab the goodies, the manager had to reach out to him within 48 hours. He did.
- Kevin Daymude, the general manager of the Blockbuster, told The Hollywood Reporter he’s thrilled. “I had no idea whatsoever he was going to do that,” Daymude says. “We would be very honored to showcase that collection.” He added that customers are already calling in to find out when they can check out the famous jockstrap.
